A rough terrain crane is a specialized type of mobile crane designed for use in rugged and uneven terrains, which are often present on construction sites, oil fields, and other large infrastructure projects.
Although they may be mounted on tracks, most rough terrain cranes are equipped with large, robust tires that enable them to safely and easily move around off-road environments without getting stuck.
Two key benefits of rough terrain cranes are their mobility and outriggers.
Outriggers are extendable legs or arms that can be deployed to provide greater stability, ensuring that the crane remains stable and safe during lifting operations, even on uneven or sloping ground.
Rough Terrain Crane Specifications and Classes
Rough terrain cranes can generally be broken down into three distinct classes of small, medium, and large-size.
- Small rough terrain cranes typically have lift capacities ranging between 5 to 40 tons. Smaller cranes, like the Sennebogen 613M and the Elctrovar Waterdrill, are generally more compact and are often used when maneuverability is required in tighter spaces, such as a factory, warehouse, or smaller construction projects.
- Medium-sized rough terrain cranes can typically lift larger loads, ranging from 40 to 100 tons. Mid-sized mobile cranes, such as the Grove GCK 3045 CITY KRAN 45 Ton and the Link Belt RTC8090 90 Ton 4x4x4 rough terrain cranes, offer a better balance between maneuverability and lifting power. They can lift much more than smaller-class cranes but are still small and mobile enough for use on a wider range of construction, mining, or infrastructure projects. Mid-size rough terrain cranes feature longer booms, enhanced stability systems, and heavier lifting capacities.
- Large rough terrain cranes are generally employed when loads exceed 100 tons. Large mobile rough terrain cranes are the heaviest-duty cranes available and are generally reserved for use on the largest mining and infrastructure projects, such as bridges, power plants, and oil refineries. These cranes often feature telescopic booms, sophisticated control systems, and heavier-duty outriggers for enhanced stability.
